Miss Good Citizen

It’s official, Toki wants to be a good dog.

She’s enrolled in an intermediate obedience class whose ultimate goal is the AKC’s Canine Good Citizen test.

The test includes 10 tasks:

  • Accepting a friendly stranger
  • Sitting politely for petting
  • Appearance and grooming
  • Out for a walk (walking on a loose lead)
  • Walking through a crowd
  • Sit and down on command and Staying in place
  • Coming when called
  • Reaction to another dog
  • Reaction to distraction
  • Supervised separation

I think our biggest challenge will be containing Toki’s overabundance of energy and enthusiasm.  At least I know she won’t be shy with a stranger!

Our teacher in the class is Lynn Medlin, who we originally met through the West Los Angeles Obedience Club.  If you live in Los Angeles and are interested in puppy classes check out the WLAOC website (note: it can be a bit confusing to navigate).  We didn’t take Lynn’s puppy classes, but they looked packed full of puppies with lots of great socialization opportunities.  There is also a whole slew of additional trainers and classes with WLAOC that you might also consider.  However, if you want the extra special personalized touch, I recommend Lynn’s amazing group classes (booked directly through her website).  They’re small and well taught – and Lynn is not only a knowledgable and skilled trainer and dog behavior specialist, she’s also a compassionate and caring teacher who goes the extra mile.  I can’t sing her praises enough!  Plus, she’s a fellow Venetian . . .

On a separate note – Have a wonderful Fourth of July weekend!!  We may have some new adventures to report to you next week!
